Main Season

For its Main Season, The Necessary Stage produces an average of two plays a year at its black box theatre and at other venues. The plays are original, mostly devised pieces created in a collaborative process that is based on research, improvisation before scripting, and input from all members of the production. This process has produced many important works which have received critical and popular acclaim. These works include the much loved production, Off Centre, which has been restaged several times, and is the first Singapore play selected as part of the GCE O- and N-Level literature syllabus from 2007; Fundamentally Happy, Good People and Gemuk Girls, all of which were awarded Best Script at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards; and Model Citizens, which received the Production of the Year award.

The Necessary Stage has also embarked upon numerous intercultural and interdisciplinary collaborations with artists and companies from countries including Australia, Croatia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia and Thailand, Domestically, it has also created critically acclaimed works such as Manifesto and Underclass, in collaboration with local theatre company Drama Box.
