Depression affects about one in 10 women during the childbearing period. The impact is not only on mother-and-child relationship. It extends to the rest of the family and can affect the development of the baby. Understanding the tumultuous journey of maternal depression helps families cope with this common situation.

Kandang Kerbau Women's and Children Hospital's Mental Wellness Service has commissioned The Necessary Stage to create and present a public awareness play dealing with maternal depression in Singapore. When the Bough Breaks tells the story of a new mother, Susan, who struggles with Postpartum Depression, and her recovery journey. Susan's story is a composite story of numerous mothers who have suffered from postpartum depression and shared their experiences in the development of the script.
